Yesterday I refashioned this cardigan with a couple layers of ruffles on one side and hidden snaps to close.

I started with this cardigan. I didn't really wear it. I didn't like the buttons and there were a couple stains around the buttons as well. I cut the buttons off and pinned the button hole side back.

Sewed a couple tube strips of heavy weight cotton and silk.

I ruffled them (
instructions here) and sewed them on top of each other with the silk one underneath, sticking out a bit.

I pinned and then sewed the double ruffle onto the inside of the cardigan that used to have the button holes.

Added those hidden snaps and done! I love the contrast of the two fabrics but the thick cotton stuff was such a pain to work with. In fact it broke my crappy sewing machine's motor. BROKE. I was going to do double ruffles on both sides
like this j.crew one, but while I was working on the second side, the machine broke. So I thought for a minute and then came up with this alternative. I have to say, I think this was a better idea to begin with.

This is so very pretty. Is silk tricky to work with? I'm always nervous
Darling!
i love it. you did such a good job...did you take your machine in?
love it miss liz- almost worth a broken machine :)
so sorry about your machine but love the cardigan!
Thanks everyone! Gina, the silk was pretty easy to work with. It just can't be pinned or sewn through without much damage to the fibers. It ruffles really easily. I'm excited to make more with the silk
this is SO CUTE. I want one!!
that sucks about your machine, hope you get it fixed. i have someone here in the bay area if you need an number
so cute! does look straight out of j.crew. which means excellent work
sooooooo great!

You and your nifty redos! I love this one. So very JCrew of you.

You are so talented Liz! I couldn't even begin to tackle something like this.
sa-weet! i have an h&m cardi just like that! i'm on it!
Dude, what a stunner! I love how it turned out. Sorry about your machine, mine always breaks half way through a project, then I get it repaired, then...break. bummer.
this is so beautiful, much better than j.crew ;)
This is so cute! I would love to link to this if you didn't mind.
rachel, that's fine as long as you give credit! :)
I love this idea. I am heading to the thrift store today to find a cute cardigan and try it out. I am not so sure about my skill level for sewing the ruffle strips, but I am going to try. Thanks for this wonderful idea!
